Soon, there will be a significant change to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the USA as many states will return to their normal SNAP benefit amounts. This program provides assistance to low-income American families, but it may soon face a reduction in benefits. The amount of SNAP benefits was increased during the pandemic to help families purchase essential groceries they could not otherwise afford.

Households received at least $95 per month as an extra boost through the SNAP program, and sometimes they received even more. However, for 32 US states, February 2023 marks the end of this extra benefit. As a result, many families who are already facing difficulties due to high inflation will experience a significant reduction in their SNAP benefits, making it a crucial development.

In how many states has the extra increase in SNAP benefits already been lowered?

Eighteen states have already decreased the SNAP benefit increase that was implemented during the pandemic. These states no longer consider the effects of the pandemic to be prevalent and thus deem the increase unnecessary. Wyoming, Tennessee, South Carolina, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, Missouri, Mississippi, Kentucky, Iowa, Indiana, Idaho, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, Arizona, and Alaska have all reverted back to their previous check amounts.

The remaining states, including the District of Columbia, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, will still offer the extra SNAP benefits. However, these benefits will end in March 2023 after the February payment. The reduction in SNAP benefits will particularly impact those with the lowest incomes who may require additional support due to inflation and the rising prices of essentials like food, gas, and electricity.

The Food and Nutrition Service was notified of these changes in 2023.

The Food and Nutrition Service has announced that in March 2023, SNAP checks will return to their regular amounts, affecting all households currently receiving SNAP benefits. Additionally, some Social Security beneficiaries may experience a reduction in their SNAP checks due to their higher SSA benefits. The FNS recommends that SNAP households contact their local office to obtain information about all the changes and to address any concerns they may have.

As the temporary boost to SNAP benefits will soon come to an end across the USA, it is crucial to take advantage of this financial assistance if you are eligible. SNAP can provide much-needed financial relief to many households and assist with monthly expenses. Any form of financial help is always welcome, so consider applying for both SNAP and any other Social Security benefits for which you qualify. If you require assistance, consult the State Directory of Resources map to locate your local SNAP office.

Which states will still provide extra SNAP benefits after March 2023?

the states that will still provide extra SNAP benefits after March 2023 are:

  • District of Columbia
  • Guam
  • US Virgin Islands
