Gardening is a very healthy hobby that has to do with growing plants, and few things in life are as satisfying and rewarding as this. Working in the garden relieves stress and allows you to relax truly. But, the best part is that this hobby can be as simple or complicated as you choose. Maybe you love the idea of growing exotic orchids, planting tomatoes, or just admiring a pretty flower on your outdoor plants.

In general, gardening can be divided into two types: outdoor gardening and indoor gardening. Some people prefer outdoor gardening because they have the ideal space, while other plant lovers can only grow plants indoors. Whatever your environment, it’s good to know the differences between indoor and outdoor plants, so we’ll talk about that below.

Main differences between outdoor and indoor plants

These are just some of the main differences between indoor and outdoor gardening. Knowing these details will help you make good decisions when choosing which plants to grow and how to treat them. But, if you have something specific already in mind and it has to do with growing your food, you should know just how easy it is to planting and growing asparagus at home

Ideal environment for each type of plant

Climate greatly affects plants indoors or outdoors. Indoor plants need a controlled temperature, and this is possible indoors, where we can manipulate the amount of water, light, the components of the substrate, and more so that they can adapt to the requirements of the species. On the other hand, outdoor plants are more resistant and can withstand climatic changes, managing to grow outdoors.

Space requirements

Indoor plants require less space to grow, while outdoor plants require more space. Unlike plants grown outdoors, houseplants cannot grow to adult size but are limited. Their growth depends on the container in which you leave them, i.e., their growth is restricted by the container. The size of the container we choose for indoor planting will depend on the space we have at home or in the office. Outdoor plants tend to spread easily.

Lighting requirements

All plant species require light, but the amount needed varies according to the plant species. Outdoor plants require more light and direct sunlight, while indoor plants can receive light through windows. Lighting can also be provided to houseplants using artificial lights. Some houseplants require little sunlight and should be placed in shady locations.

Amount of water required

Another difference between indoor and outdoor plants is water regulation. Indoor plants must be watered, while outdoor plants can be maintained with a regular rainwater supply, depending on your area and the type of plant.

Adequate water should be provided to houseplants, but overwatering causes the houseplant to become susceptible to fungus, resulting in damage. At the same time, the outdoor plant drains excess water and thus is more resistant. Another important detail is that inadequate water supply causes the roots of indoor plants to stick to their containers, while outdoor plants continue to grow in search of water.

Preparation for cultivation

Soil preparation and maintenance are complex and required for both plants. Soil nutrients may decrease with repeated planting. Therefore, it is necessary to add new nutrients periodically.

Use of chemicals

Chemicals are used to kill fungi and other pathogens that cause damage to plants. But, it is not as simple as it sounds; disease control is becoming more challenging nowadays, as these products have a proven detrimental effect.

In addition, it is difficult to incorporate pesticides into indoor plants compared to outdoor plants, as they are closer to you and can be even more detrimental to your health. On the other hand, outdoor plants have more contact with pathogens and require more care. In any case, integrated pest management is recommended to prevent diseases in your garden plants.
